Bridging a Gap for 2011…

The festive break proved the ideal time for the installation of a new rail bridge which needed to be positioned over Grange Road, Sellyoak near Birmingham; and TPA, the portable access specialist, was on hand to assist contractors Birse Rail and Birse Civils JV in the giant manoeuvre.

This tight timeframe contract saw TPA send four, two men installation crews to site at 2am on Boxing Day. 288 roadway panels were installed in just four hours covering an area of 2100 sqm to allow the equipment needed to install the 3800 tonne concrete bridge sections access to position them into place.

The new bridge had been constructed adjacent to the railway line and was lifted into place by ALE (Abnormal Load Engineering) with their SPMT (Self Propelling Mobile Transporter) to allow the new road to pass beneath the existing railway line.

TPA’s Ian Burney commented; “Due to the tight rail possession time, we had to get the panels installed extremely quickly to allow Birse to get the bridge sections into place and the line re-opened. The crews worked brilliantly and achieved the job in just four hours which meant all deadlines were met and the job completed on time. We received extremely good feedback from Birse and look forward to working with them again soon.”
